On The Road With GrantWatch

World Changes Nonprofit Organization

Anthony Baxter

Community Leader

This transcription is written in Q&A form, with the questions being asked by Libby Hikind and the answers being given by Anthony Baxter.

Hi, I'm Libby Hikind, the founder and CEO of GrantWatch.com. I am here today in Seattle, Washington, with Anthony Baxter.

Anthony is the community leader of World Changes Nonprofit Organization in Seattle. We are interviewing him to see how his organization runs.

Q: What exactly is it that you are doing?

A: We assist those that are coming out of incarceration get stabilized in the community, so that they can be an asset to the community, not a liability.

Q: And that is very much needed for people coming out of incarceration to have that new lease on life and to be part of the community. How do you do that? Where's the funding coming from?

A: The funding is coming from outside resources, donors, and sponsors, as well as grants. GrantWatch has been an asset to us, as well as other agencies. There are a lot of mental health grants out there. One of the things I like about GrantWatch is that you can put in what you are looking for, and those actual grants will pop up. So you don't have to filter out — what you're looking at, is what you're looking for.

Q: And we add new grants every day. So if you don't see it today, you may see it tomorrow or the next day. So you just have to stick with it.

So, what makes GrantWatch stand out in your mind from all the other websites that you've looked at?

A: Well, I would say, the notifications that I get. I'm busy thinking about applying for grants; but when I open my email, there's an email that says, ‘Hey, Latest Grants’, and that really helps me out.

Q: And those emails are the grants that we've posted within the last seven days?

A: Correct.

Q: What kinds of grants have you gotten?

A: We have gotten grants for assistance with our payroll. We have also gotten a band through a grant from Metro. We have got a couple of $25,000 grants through Renton Regional Community Foundation; and through GrantWatch, we are in the process of writing two grants.

Q: Since you have won some grants, I know that our audience is going to want to know what your tips are. What are the most important things when writing a grant?

A: I would probably say make sure that your finances are in order and that you don't try to create a program based upon the grant. Try to find a grant that fits your program.
